Strong and Healthy Nails

Growing up, we have always been told, “First Impression is the Last Impression!” keeping this in mind, we strive to present ourselves most appropriately and attractively. We make sure our hair is well done, make-up is to the T, and make this happen; we have a daily routine (for healthy hair and skin). But while doing so, most of us unconsciously ignore Nails. Has anyone heard of or talked about a Nail care routine? Probably not.

Today let us discuss signs of healthy nails and a few To Dos & Don’ts for strong and healthy nails.

Nails are primarily composed of a layer of protein called Keratin. It protects nails from damage by making them strong and resilient. Nails are said to be strong and healthy if:

  1. They are smooth and without pits.
  2. They have a uniform color and do not have any spots or discoloration. However, sometimes fingernails develop harmless vertical ridges that run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail.

When we talk about taking care of the nails, below are few things to keep in mind:

1. Moisturize nails and cuticles:

Moisturizing nails and cuticles make them look better and helps protect nails from breaking due to lack of moisture. Applying oil around the cuticle helps moisturize the entire nail, which helps reduce the incidence of chipping, cracking, and splitting. Ideally, any oil should be good for this but applying Almond oil rich in essential antioxidants, Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, and vitamins E, A, B1, B2, and B6, coats the nails with rich nutrients that protect them from the problems mentioned above.

    2. Avoid Acetone based nail paint/polish removers:

You should avoid using acetone nail polish remover if you have brittle nails, as they cause nails to become brittle. Instead, one can use lemon or vinegar as a natural nail polish remover.

      3. Intake of biotin:

Some research suggests that the nutritional supplement biotin may help strengthen weak or brittle fingernails.

        4. Do not pick at your cuticles:

This can damage the nail bed and can allow bacteria or fungi to enter and cause an infection.

          5. Stay hydrated and eat well:

Even for nails right amount of water and the right consumption of healthy food is essential as it retains moisture in the nails. Without adequate moisture, nails can become brittle and break easily. Make sure you are eating a healthy diet and taking additional multivitamins supplements.

            6. Give your nails a break from polish:

Although nail polish looks nice, our nails need to breathe. Constant use of nail polish can weaken the nail.

              7. Talk to your doctor:

If multiple things have been tried for few weeks and there has been no change in your nails, see a dermatologist. They can look at your nails and ask you questions about your routine and overall health. If need be, they can prescribe a prescription-strength nail treatment that can help to strengthen your nails.
